چکیده

Motivated by the deployment of wide-area high-speed networks, we propose GENEVA, the streaming control algorithm using generalized multiplicative-increase/additive-decrease (GMIAD). Because current typical congestion controllers such as a TCP-friendly rate control prevent occurrences of network congestion reacting susceptibly to packet loss, it causes a significant degradation of streaming quality due to low-achieving throughput (i.e., lower throughput than the maximum throughput that a streaming flow requires in maximum audio/video quality) and data packet losses. GENEVA avoids this problem by allowing a streaming flow to maintain moderate network congestion while trying to recover lost data packets that other competing flows cause during the process of probing for available bandwidth. Using the GMIAD mechanism, the FEC window size (the degree of FEC redundancy per unit time) is adjusted to suppress occurrences of bursty packet loss, while trying to effectively utilize network resources that other competing flows cannot consume due to reductions in the transmission rate in response to packet loss. We describe the GENEVA algorithm and evaluate its effectiveness using an NS-2 simulator. The results show that GENEVA enables high-performance streaming flows to retain higher streaming quality under stable conditions while minimizing the adverse impact on competing TCP performance.

Interaction Between MIMD-Poly and PIPD-Poly Algorithms and Other TCP Variants in Multiple Bottleneck TCP Networks

This paper introduces and analyzes a class of non-linear congestion control algorithms called polynomial congestion control algorithms. They generalize the Additive Increase and Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) algorithms used for Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connections. These algorithms provide additive increase using a polynomial of the inverse of the current window size and provide mul...

TCP-friendly Congestion Control for Real-time Streaming Applications

This paper introduces and analyzes a class of nonlinear congestion control algorithms called binomial algorithms, motivated in part by the needs of streaming audio and video applications for which a drastic reduction in transmission rate upon congestion is problematic. Binomial algorithms generalize TCP-style additive-increase by increasing inversely proportional to a power k of the current win...

A comparison of two popular end-to-end congestion control algorithms: the case of AIMD and AIPD

The focus of this paper is to compare two popular end-to-end congestion control algorithms in the literature, namely, AIMD (additive increase/multiplicative decrease) and AIPD (additive increase/loss proportional decrease). We clarify the definitions of AIMD and AIPD algorithms, and compare them in various aspects such as convergence, steady state throughput, fairness characteristics, and the c...

Additive Increase Appears Inferior

Feedback-based adjustment of load is a common mechanism for resource allocation in computer networks. This paper disputes the popular beliefs that the additive-increase multiplicative-decrease adjustment policy is optimal or even necessary for convergence to fair resource sharing. We demonstrate that, in the classic synchronous model, additive increase does not guarantee the quickest convergenc...

A Comparison of End-to-End Congestion Control Algorithms: The Case of AIMD and AIPD

The focus of this paper is to compare two popular congestion control algorithms: AIMD (additive increase/multiplicative decrease) and AIPD (additive increase/loss proportional decrease). The key contributions of the paper are two-fold: (a) we first clarify the definitions of AIMD and AIPD congestion control algorithms, and compare them in various aspects: convergence characteristics, steady sta...
